August 2020: COVID days of Summer trump normal life….

So this is a little late, not like I was receiving e-mails or text messages wondering where it is…

In the news and not so news…

Our Fearless Leader Governor John Bel Edwards has the state again in Phase 2 suspended animation, now through August 28th.  Mask orders are in effect for pretty much everywhere.

Rapides Parish Schools open up Monday with certain procedures.  K-2 no masks, but everybody else mask up.   The High Schools and probably Junior Highs as well with be in A and B groups where A’s attend in person class on Monday and Friday and B’s attend Tuesday and Thursday with Wednesday being cleaning and on-line day.  Groups not in person will have online instruction on those days.

The Round-a-bout at Pineville Junior High (Edgewood and Susek Drives) opens Saturday before school.  As for that Jackson Street and Horseshoe Drive Round-a-bout, used it last week as we had lunch with old acquaintances.

“The Twit” did manage to venture down from “The Great Northwest” (Seattle) for a week and half visit.  Had to take a Rona test upon return (negative) — guess that means “I ain’t got no COVID cooties”.

NBA, MLB, and NHL are back — Who Cares !!!  and that is not a question.

Not much more to add during these days of sensitivity, so on to the B-Days…

July 2020: COVID trumps Independence Day

Well after mass “gatherings” contributed to an uptick in COVID cases, Gov. Edwards extended our stay in Stage 2 Purgatory for another 4 weeks (3 to go as of today).

Major League Baseball supposedly returning July 23 or 24.  Texas teams (Rangers and Astros) to get the travel fatigue special, playing their American League West Coast teams as well as they NL West counterparts for a 60 game season.  Universal Designated Hitter for this season and Extra Innings start with a man on 2nd.

NBA returning sometime later this month playing mini-season and playoffs at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Resort.

James Harden Still Getting Fouled Despite 6-Foot Social Distancing Rule

Local stuff — Round-about completed on Jackson Street @ Horseshoe Drive — one day I might venture that direction and see — nothing there I frequent.  Another Round-about being constructed at Edgewood and Susek right in front of Pineville Junior High scheduled for reopen before school starts.

Whataburger coming to Kingsville, top right corner of Walmart parking lot.  Opening early next year.  Also one coming to Natchitoches in front of new Hobby Lobby.

No Fireworks for Cities of Alexandria or Pineville this weekend due to COVID.

New Principal for ASH promoted from THS.

Ward 10 reopening for THS Baseball, Softball and Travel Ball.

That’s all the local, I’m typing about.

On to the B-days — too bad the Governor’s reopened to Purgatory Stage 2 or y’all could still be 49 like me and Kingston

THS 88 B-days for July

June 2020: 76 years ago Allies trump Fortress Europe

‘The eyes of the world are upon you’ — Read Gen. Eisenhower’s letter to troops before D-Day

Dwight Eisenhower before D-Day

General Dwight D. Eisenhower addresses American paratroopers prior to D-Day.

On this day 76 years ago, more than 150,000 American, British, and Canadian soldiers were taking part in the largest amphibious operation in history. It was called Operation Overlord.

It was June 6, 1944 — D-Day — when the liberation of France from its Nazi occupiers began. Less than a year later, the allies would celebrate the victory of Europe, and the end of the regime of Adolf Hitler.

But before all of that, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, the commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force that would carry out the invasion, wrote two letters. One, which was never sent, was written in case the effort failed. The other was sent to all his troops, wishing them luck before they embarked upon the “great crusade” against the Nazis they had trained and awaited for many months.

First drafted in February 1944, Eisenhower had it distributed on the eve of the invasion. It was only one page.

You can view a copy of the letter below:

eisenhower dday letter
American troops composed of Anglo-Americans, Italian-Americans, German-Americans, African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Native Americans, etc., all just considering themselves Americans, landed on the beaches of Normandy establishing the foothold that would lead to Victory in Europe.
A good movie on the lead up is Ike:  Coutdown to D-Day, originally produced and aired on AMC but available on Prime.
Moving along to local and state news:
Louisiana has moved into Phase 2 of reopening, among the rewards – Restaurants can have 50 percent seating, Barbers can now shave your neck but not your face, and churches can operate at 50 percent capacity.  Don’t know what how I’ll handle this church thing without my “emotional support cat” !!!
Did get a haircut — this past Thursday, and Just For Men’d meself — good to look like trimmed again.
THS to have 2020 Graduation, June 26th at The Reservation aka stadium.
Sad news:
Long time THS English Teacher, Glenda Waites passed away last month from complications of Alzheimer’s.  She taught at THS for 28 years, (1964-1995), 28 years, spanning 4 decades.
Other COVIDy News:
Sports are gradually coming back on-line with the NBA and NHL resuming for playoffs.  The NBA will be sequestered at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Resort.  NHL certain venues, last I saw, both with no fans in attendance.
MLB still trying to work out season length and salary reductions for a season, possibly starting after July 1st — again no fans, except in Texas for the Astros and Rangers where Governor Abbott has authorized 50 percent capacity.  Rangers can have fans at their new ballpark.
Who would have thought it would be acceptable to walk around with a Mask and a gun !!!
Other Non-Covid News:
Watched with excitement as American Returned to manned space flight with the launch of SpaceX Crew Dragon Capsule.  It was reminiscent of when the first Shuttle mission launch.  I always wanted to be there for a shuttle launch — was in Florida once when an launch was pending, turns out it ended up being delayed until after we returned home.  Perhaps one day I can get to see a SpaceX launch in person.
Tropical Storm Cristobol’s track look like it’ll mostly miss CenLA, rain and wind still possible.  Sunday night into Monday for that.
B-Day calendar (quite a few dups this month) and shut this puppy down:

June 1     Jason Lott

June 3     Doretha Williams Godfrey

June 10   Brandy Turner
June 10   Stacey Malone Coleman

June 12   Becky Bunting Malcomb

May 2020: Corona trumps 5 years of training…

The tragedy, the anguish, the disappointment.  Like the 1980 US Olympic team with the Moscow Olympics Boycott.  The torn ACL or ruptured achilles during Olympic Trials or in warm-ups.  The sheer agony and unfairness.  We’ve trained for this and now it’s taken away — Cinco de Mayo Taco Tuesday together again, all for naught.

Oh what is there to type…  While Governors Abbott and Kemp are opening up Texas and Georgia, our fine Governor St. John Bel has us on lockdown through the 15th, perhaps a “Moses” will come on that day to Baton Rouge with the command to “Let my people go”.  Upset as we are with this delay, it pales in comparison to other states May 30th in Washington State, JULY 6th in OREGON (which has an extreme low case count — they drink mainly craft beer).  Biggest issue here in the Bayou State is the Western and Central zones of the state met the requirements for Stage 1 reopening, yet because the ImporTANTS in Baton Rouge and New Orleans cannot be freed the rest of us remain on lockdown.  We shall survive.

Occasionally breaking out of the house here — cue up the Johnny Cash

I’ve been everywhere Man
I’ve been everywhere
Breaking quarantine man
Shopping up a storm man
I’ve been everywhere?

The Twit had planned a May visit, ususally the annual Disney run, but this year plans were for here and maybe some travel.  Anyway she’s in the quandry of Washington, “do I go?”  “will I have to self-quarantine upon return”…  Rest of the story still to be written.

At least us Louisiana folks can now go to Texas as the border enforcement has been lifted.  Mississippi however has put up the road blocks.

And some of you folks gonna look like overgrown poodles once the barbers and stylist reopen.  Amber and Tina I believe are the exceptions of the women folk as they have hairdressers on family retainer.  Covered the men last month.  I did order me a clipper kit and did some work on the side panels, t’was indeed needed.

2020 Grads:  Normally I’d list graduates but don’t know of any.  Actually I know of one, but to my knowledge that parent hasn’t been reading lately — so there.  Send the info or post to FB and I’ll get them added.  Basic info, Name, HS, future plans (optional).

Since the Governor has canceled Birthdays in Louisiana through the 15th, I hope you enjoy a Happy Personal Recognition Day — you in other states with a lifted lockdown will just have to age normally.  Here’s the list…

May 1 Cheli Gray
May 4 Nancy Bryan Jackson
May 4 Traci Jo Wehrle

May 5 Mindy Henderson Bryan

May 8 Randy Mehling

May 8 Chad LaCaze

May 10 Kellie Ziegler Dempsey

May 13 Dina Green Rogers
May 13 Dodie Green Deleery
a two-fer, how did that happen ?

May 14 Tonya Johnson Ferrier

May 15 Monica Partney Ford

May 21 Graduation of THS 88 — rain et al, queue up Eddie Rabbitt “I love a Rainy Night:— 32years ago…

May 26 Steve McKeithen

May 27 Shelli Chance Alexander

May 29 Shannon Greer
May 29 Shawn Gorham

April 2020: Corona Virus trumps Everything !!!

Screenshot_20200401-184246_Samsung Internet

That’s what a lot of us gonna look like once we’re released.  40+ days, no barbers, stylist or beauticians.  Picket, Gordon, Bardwell, Wilson, Hall, and others will probably be fine and looking quite dapper as always.

Any of you “Children of the 80’s” have this go through your head —  M, M, MY CORONA….

Seems a little more to this Corona thing than last I typed.  Thank you for social distancing !!!!  I’ll be sure to virus check all your replies — though that’s not likely necessary.

A recipe for all you shut ins:

Kev’s Chicken and Pasta Deliciousness

1/2 to 3/4 pound of Bacon
1 Large Onion (Texas 1015 or Vidalias — very good)
1 Large Chicken Breast
2 Cans Red Gold Petite Diced Tomatoes with Green Chiles
1 pound package of Penne or Bowtie pasta
8 oz. Mozarella shredded

I use a 12 inch iron skillet for this.  Takes nearly an hour to prepare but well worth it.

Start your pasta water and boil the whole box.

Start by cutting your bacon in thirds lengthwise then 1/4 to 1/2 inch pieces crosswise.  Add a touch of olive oil to skillet and render bacon until crisp.  Remove into bowl leaving bacon grease in skillet.

Cut onion in half (stem to stem) and then into slivers lengthwise.  (you can do this while the bacon starts cooking).  Add to bacon grease and caramelize until delicious brown.  Remove and add to bowl with Bacon.

Sear chicken in the Onion infused bacon grease.  Pour settled liquid infusion from Bowl into skillet.  If large chicken breast, butterfly or otherwise slice to smaller/thinner widths.  Once seared on each sided remove and slice into bite size pieces and return to skillet to finish cooking.

Once chicken fully cooked, empty bacon and onion bowl into skillet.  Toss and stir in for a minute then add 2 cans of Red Gold.  Stir in and generously top with Black Pepper.

Drain pasta.  Fold in pasta with chicken mixture.  It’s easier to remove chicken mixture and combine with pasta in separate pan.  Fold in to equally distribute.

At this point you can go casserole pan or return to the iron skillet.  Using a bowl, scoop about a 1/3 in to the skillet top with cheese.  Repeat 2 times, make sure you leave plenty of cheese for the top.  Broil until brown.  Remove and serve.

Any other recipes you’d like to share, you can add to the comments.  Don’t worry about the e-mail thing, just make one up — it’ll take.

We now rejoin our regular bloggage, already in progress.

and the home of the Brave…  You missed the National Anthem while reading a recipe…

Well, life as a shut-in has created quite the busy schedule.  Was burning a tree stump until the Governor declared a statewide burn ban.  Water heater went out so had to get and install a new one — did have to hire some muscle to transport new up and old into and out of the attic.  Mowed the lawn, and familiarize myself with daytime TV.  Figured out how to share screen from phone to project Sunday service onto the TV.

As engaging as that all is, we have a couple of Engagements to announce, one I missed before and one from just a few days ago.

John Jeansonne and Della LaCroix

Jackie Hooter and Danny Butler

February 2020: Our Tigers TRUMP their Tigers, and creepy mascot.

Well this is a little later than even last year, but that was only 1 day, and I had only been out of Rapides Regional Members Club for 2 days, and not quite so entertaining.

LSU, Joe Burreaux, Coach O and Co. whooped up on defending Champs Clemson to win the CFP National Championship.  Having watched a clip of Burrow and Kirk Herbstreet on how Heisman Joe read the defense, I saw the last TD to Marshall before the snap.  Loved the announcer — “Burrow going for the KILL SHOT”.

T’was quite ambivalent about the Super Bowl, no Saints, and didn’t really care for either team.  So I went with preferred team Kansas City as I didn’t want San Fran to be able to crow “we’ve won all 6 Super Bowls we’ve been in”.

XFL starts this weekend, some different rules:  running clock; one foot inbounds for catch; 3 options for extra points – 1 point from the 2, 2 pts from the 5, and 3 pts from the 10 – offensive plays from the 5 and 10; onside kicks eliminated with an equivalent of 4th and 15 from their own 35.  Should be interesting, perhaps the league will last the 10 game season.

Nothing on the local front of any interest that I can remember that might interest anyone.  Except, missed last month Jason Dukes got married – going for 2.

Nothing on the personal medical front. though I am monitoring a couple of spots along the seam — hopefully, not again — Doc don’t need another boat !!!

The THS 88 B-days as we know them for February:  Entry in to the 2nd phase of F-years for most.

Feb 3     BPSD Deputy Lynnette Bradley-Avery
Feb 3     Carla McAlister-Smith
Feb 9     Janet Butler-Raines

Feb 21   Brandon Marler
Feb 23   Anthony Riddick
Feb 24   Tracy Malone

Jan 2020: Apathy trumps timely blogging

or is it just general laziness?  You decide, but don’t tell me or anyone else via open channels…

Since we last typed — and by that I mean, I last typed:

Monday, Dec 16th:  F3 tornado made it’s way through CenLA.  62 mile path winds in excess of 160, 400 yards wide, traveling from south of Leesville to Alexandria (28 West) jumping the river to Donahue Ferry and Edgewood.  Destroyed Johnny Downs Sports complex South side of AEX, went just behind Coca Cola and jumped the river.

Saturday, Dec 28:  LSU DESTROYS Oklahoma to advance to the College Football National Championship vs. defending champ Clemson, Monday Night, Jan 13 from the Mercedes Benz Superdome on ESPN — 7:20 CST.  Tigers vs. Tigers Oh My !!!

Saints won the division prior to December, finished 13-3 but got no help from the Vikings vs. Packers in week 16 or from the Seahawks vs. the 49ers in week 17 and had to play Wild Card Weekend.  They came out flat, kept trying to run the ball and got nowhere — threw the ball to get back into it and lost in OT on another questionable pass interference no-call — would they have held the Vikings to a FG and had a chance to score, who knows?  but they stunk it up and are watching the playoffs with the Cowboys.

THS NewsTioga QB Blake McGehee named player of the year for the district.

No surgeries of other calamities as far as I can see…  4 hernia surgeries in 2019 is enough for a lifetime.  That 6-8 weeks recovery each time ate up the year..

At one time I thought I had more, but on to the B-Days, most of us entering that second phase of F-Years !!!

Jan 2      Paula Swartz Corley
Jan 5      Regina “Jenny” Howell
Jan 15    Michelle Barnhart Childs
Jan 18    Lisa “Coupon Queen” Rosatto Green
Jan 19    Kathy Morgan-Sihan

THS 88 — Tigers Night Before Christmas: A bedtime story for LSU fans everywhere

From The Advocate

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the state,
The excitement was building; fans hardly could wait.
The season had gone just as Coach O had planned,

With all opponents shredded by Joe Burrow’s hot hand.
Longhorns, Tide and Gators, Rebels and Hogs,
Two kinds of Aggies, two kinds of Bulldogs,
‘Dores, Auburn, Demons and Georgia Southern, too,
None could prevail against LSU.
The offense was so strong it seemed almost unfair
With Chase, Jefferson, Moss and Edwards-Helaire.
Opposing defenses were put through the wringer
By plays from Joe Brady and Steve Ensminger.
Late in the season, the defense attacked like a shark.

Phillips and Stevens, Delpit and Clark,
Queen and Chaisson, Stingley and Fehoko,
And the rest of the defense drove quarterbacks loco.
With Von Rosenberg punting and York kicking,
The special teams just kept right on clicking.
Postseason trophies made the Tigers’ strength clear:
Heisman and Maxwell and Coach of the Year,

Thorpe and Unitas and Biletnikoff, too;
These honors confirmed what all Tiger fans knew.
But that’s not enough; now the playoffs begin,
Where four teams will start, but only one team can win.
Fans trust when they hear Coach Orgeron say:
“One Team, One Heartbeat … We comin’ to play.”
Now fans hope their Christmas wishes come true:
Tickets for the Peach Bowl — the national championship, too.
As the biggest games draw ever so near,
The merriest of Christmases for Tiger fans this year!

and from THS 88 on the Web

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL !!!

Dec 2019: LSU trumps Alabama, Texas, Mississippi, Florida, Arkansas…

and only Georgia remains in the SEC Championship Game Saturday to make it a sweep of the Deep South and then on to the College Football Playoffs.  Did Coach O finally fix the Offense or what?  Joe Burreaux for Heisman !!!

Yeah, I know this edition is late, and some folks actually checked in, most did the usual.

On to the local news and such.

THS Indian Football falls in second round to Warren Easton of New Orleans.

McDonald’s Kingsville reopened.

Marble Slab Creamery / Great American Cookie Co. opening in Pineville next week just north of Wal-mart behind Evangeline Bank.

Once again the Highway 71 railroad bridge just past Stone’s Throw and old Stalnaker’s is open — for those venturing in for Christmas.

Saints currently #1 seed in the NFC facing the identical record (10-2) Santa Clara 49ers, Sunday, Noon, CST, on FOX.  Saints are the 1 seed as they have the tie breaker over Seattle, who currently has the tie breaker with the 49ers, though they have another match up on the schedule.

Just finished up 5 weeks post-surgery of a 6-8 week recovery, so we getting there.

Not much more I can think of that’s cheery and of relevance to all so let’s get those Birthdays posted and shut this thing down.
